I stumbled across this high speed photography video that someone posted on Youtube. I found it quite interesting. I also saw in the person’s comments that he actually fired the flashes manually to capture these balloons popping. So he did not have to use a sound trigger device to capture these moments. There is hope for those of us who don’t particularly want to create a sound triggering device for our high speed photos. Yay!

The video is less than 2 minutes long, and it is a time lapse of what the photographer did. So you are able to see all of the equipment he uses, in addition to the photos he took. Definitely check it out.

In my pursuit and research of high speed photography. I came across a couple of websites with very informative techniques.

The first one actually has multiple photography styles that it shares detailed information on, but if you’re interested in the high speed style – it is the first section:

Most of the sites I came across talk about a “flash controller” or a sound trigger, to syncronize the flash and shutter with the action.  This ensures that you don’t miss your opportunity to capture your desired effect in the photograph.  This is something I did not even factor.  I realized you have to have the shutter and flash go off at precisely the same time, but I was not sure how to accomplish this.  The website above was quite helpful.  If you click on the DIY – High Speed Photography at Home it gives you some great information.

In my research so far, I’m finding that high speed photography is a lot more complex than I had anticipated. But don’t let this stop you! I’m not finished with researching, and I believe there has got to be a way to take high speed photos without the sound trigger… but to manually take pictures with only the flash and very little equipment. I’ll keep you updated, and in the future I’ll be doing some high speed tests of my own.

Hello Fellow Photographers!

I wanted to take a few minutes today to share a bit about High-speed Photography. I have recently become extremely fascinated with this style of photography. Although I have yet to take these incredible high-speed photos, I intend to attempt at some point in the future.

Your shutter speed has to be extremely quick to capture any decent high-speed photographs. Once I test out this style, I will share more on my experience and what shutter speeds work for me. Until that time, I’ll be doing some more research on the style. This will take me a few days or maybe weeks, since I have another job and little time to devote to my favorite pass time. However, I’ll share with you what I find out, so that if I am unable to test out the high-speed technique – you can attempt it even before I do.

But! You have to take an interest and have a passion for this style of photography before we go any further… because if you don’t, then you’ll simply want to give up. Although I haven’t had experience in this area of photography, I can already tell you it is a very difficult to capture some of these incredible images. So it may not be for everyone. But if you have a passion for learning high-speed photography and want to master this style, by all means – go for it!
